Year Long “Rock Painting” Project – Rock Donations Needed!!

Also in Honor of “Disabilities Awareness Month”,  we would like to ask for your help over the course of this school year, with a “Rock Painting” project!

Since this is our final year at Driver, we are hoping to leave a lasting impression of our love, understanding, and growth as a school, and as individuals.  This would build on the Autism motto “All the pieces fit together.”

Collecting the rocks, all painted differently, would promote the belief and feeling that… “It takes EVERYTHING and EVERYONE to make a school and community work! –  (The pieces all fit!).”  

Please send in a rock/rocks to school as soon as you can. The rocks will be collected and given in class sets to the teachers, for each student in the classroom to paint when their classroom teacher and /or Art teacher plans for the class rock painting project during the year.

We will close this “extended” project out on the last week of the year, by taking one day to have students and staff (current and former) place their rocks in a designated place in front of the school to say a “Good Bye!” to Driver Elementary.

October is Disabilities Awareness Month

In honor of October being “Disabilities Awareness Month” this year at Driver Elementary we will be:


  • displaying an array of words written the way a person with dyslexia would view them.  This will promote conversation, letter recognition, and communication.

  •  setting up a program to utilize wheel chairs. Ms. Woods has once again graciously offered to come in and demonstrate how people who live without the use of their legs adapt. She will demonstrate using a wheel chair, and hand chair, and allow our students to try them out (with assistance). This will promote exercise, understanding, and interaction between all the kids.

  • providing teachers with biographical information about famous individuals who have a disability. Teachers will be able to include this information in their weekly newsletters and/or on their class/grade level blog. Websites with additional information will also be shared to promote discussion at home.



At the PTA/ Open house on Thursday, Oct. 5th. @ 6 p.m. we will have:

  • a Sign Language Interpreter to sign the meeting.

  • on display at the PTA table “Disability Awareness” bookmarks & stickers available for each child in attendance to the PTA/Open House.

  • a “Disability Awareness” table accessible to all parents and students to learn about disabilities, test out braille, sensory gloves, and have an eye mask that mimics being blind to try out as well. We are hoping this promotes discussion at school and at home.

  • Local Restaurant Menu’s  written in braille and with just pictures on display.

DES will need Male Volunteers to help launch the “Watch D.O.G.S.” Program

Driver Elementary School is very excited about bringing the “Watch D.O.G.S.” Program here to provide positive male role models in our students lives.  We need your help to make this wonderful program a success for our students.

WATCH D.O.G.S. is a one-of-a-kind school-based, father involvement program that works to support education and safety.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the Watch D.O.G.S. program here at Driver Elementary School, please let your child’s teacher know so we can provide you with the contact information of our DES parent  who will be heading up the program here at school.

Please remember that you will need to be an approved volunteer, through Volunteer Connect, to be an active participant working with the students in school.

Back to School Orientation will be Thursday, August 31st

Orientation will take place on August 31st from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon in the student’s assigned classroom*.

*Kindergarten parents will report to the cafeteria at 9:00 a.m. to meet with the Kindergarten teachers.

All other parents, students and guests may attend at their convenience during this time frame to meet their child’s teacher and tour the facility.

Parents for grades 2 – 5 only will be able to pay $4.00 for your child’s agenda and communication folder.

March of Dimes Fundraiser March 27th-March 31st



These are our March of Dimes Fundraiser activities scheduled for March 27 th – 31 st .

  • Monday: Hat Day $1.00

  • Tuesday: -Storybook character day $1.00 *Please no masks, scary costumes or toy weapons/props.

  • Wednesday: Homework Pass $1.00 each, may purchase up to 5

  • Thursday: Gum Day $1.00

  • Friday: Pajama Day $1.00. * Please make sure that pajamas are appropriate for school. No see-through or sheer material, shorts must be worn under any skirted attire; no spaghetti straps; and shoes must be worn for safety reasons.

  • Baby Tokens to display on classroom door are $1.00 each. The class with the most squares will win a delicious ice cream party!!

  • Pie in the Face Contest- $1.00 for each ticket to vote for a participating teacher to get a pie in the face on Field Day!!!! Thank you for your support!!!!

March 6th – 14th Scholastic Book Fair @ Driver Elementary

The Scholastic Book Fair will run March 6th -14th  during the school day (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) and will be OPEN during the “Art and Music in our Schools” PTA event on March 7th at 5:30 and close at 7:00 PM. 

Cash or Credit Cards preferred, checks made out to DES will be accepted.
